Patient Health Data Integration

Throughout a lifetime, many medical examinations protocols in doctor’s offices aggregate, next to ultrasound and diagnostic radiology medical images in hospitals, diagnostic blood or urine tests in laboratories. A large amount of patient health data is the result, often distributed over multiple computer systems, databases, archives, and networks, and electronic or paper-based formats. With many health care organizations still using monolithic IT platforms built on proprietary, closed, or obsolete software architectures, patient health data integration remains a challenge.
Health Telematics offers new perspectives in the supply of health care services; simultaneously generating large amounts of patient data from Telemedicine application (video-based physician consultations), Continuous Telemonitoring (optimization of medication in patients) or data sets from Smart Wearables (emote monitoring of vital signs). As such, telematics infrastructure requires standardized software programs, harmonized IT applications based on smooth and fast data exchange. Integration of patients and health service providers through data centers via high-speed data highways is an absolute necessity. The Electronic Health Care Record (EHR) For effective utilization of patient health data, Health insurance companies are obliged by the Appointment Service & Supply Act to provide their insured members a personalized electronic health care record (EHR). As of 2021, the main objective of the EHR is to improve the integration and synthesis of existing patient data. Physicians can use it in advance of a patient consultation or with decision support systems for patient diagnoses. As an application based on digital documents and computer records, the EHR also supports the objective of a paper-free doctor’s office or for data exchange with hospital information systems. Other EHR functions provide communication and data transfer interfaces and for integration of further health telematics applications. The Electronic Prescription Card, The Electronic Vaccination Card To improve transparency in the drug supply of patients, the Act for more Safety in Drug Supply passed legislation. In 2020/21, the integration of pharmacies and hospitals with the telematics infrastructure will start. From 2022 on, medical prescriptions will have to be provided exclusively in electronic format and for transmission within the telematics infrastructure only. Narcotics and OTC drugs in prescription format eventually to be added. An Electronic Vaccination Card is the next step and for the administration of vaccinations.
